Park Street Dental is an amalgam-free practice. Composite resin is an alternative to amalgam and does not contain mercury. Composite resin is a tooth-coloured filling material that is used to restore decayed, cracked, or fractured teeth. Composite resin restorations are bonded to the tooth and hardened with special curing lights. Composite resin come in a variety of tooth-coloured shades, so the colour of the filling can be closely matched to the colour of tooth.
Composite resin restorations are very durable and can last many years. As with most restorations they may some day require replacement.
At Park Street Dental we strive to be as conservative as possible, meaning we try to prepare the smallest filling feasible. We employ the principles of minimal-invasive dentistry, which means preserving as much tooth structure as possible. To achieve this, we aim to diagnose and locate the decay at the earliest stage. Therefore, we advocate regular dental check-ups, routine dental x-rays, and the use of the Kavo 'Diagnodent'. The 'Diagnodent' use fine pulses of laser light in the grooves, pits and fissures of teeth to detect where a surface is decayed.
We also, where possible, utilise air abrasion technology in decay removal. Air abrasion involves a fine stream of pressurised abrasive particles. Used for minor cavities, restorations using air abrasion technology require no drilling and no needles. Although air abrasion technology cannot be used for all cavities, we try to employ it where ever possible.
