Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can not only be an embarrassing problem, but also a major health issue. OSA may be a contributing factor in high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and heart attacks.
Mandibular advancement splints (MAS) can be an easy and effective way of treating mild to moderate cases of OSA. A MAS is worn whilst sleeping, positioning the lower jaw forward, posturing the tongue forward, and increasing airway space.
In accordance with law in Victoria, the severity of a person's OSA must be diagnosed by a sleep or respiratory physician. Lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and a decrease in alcohol consumption, can help in the reduction of OSA. Prior to the construction of a MAS, good dental health and good oral hygiene must be ensured.
